A Floral Painted Ceiling in a 1920s Family Home in Sweden
This 1920s family home is located on a corner plot surrounded by greenery in a quiet residential street in a suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden. The historic house was carefully renovated, bringing it into the 21st century without losing the historic character and soul of the home.
The house was designed in an elegant classicist style of the twenties, and many original details have been preserved, such as ceiling rosettes, ceiling coffers, mirrored doors, wooden panels, and cast iron radiators.
The finest original element can be seen on the ceiling of the first-floor landing. The wooden ceiling has been beautifully painted in a floral arrangement.
The entire ground floor is designed in a semi-open-plan layout. The entrance hall gives access to the largest corner room, which is painted in a muted gray shade paired with white paneling.
The stylish and modern sitting room has French doors leading to a veranda, creating a wonderful indoor/outdoor living situation.
The veranda is decorated with a large U-shaped bench and a table. Wooden steps lead you to the green garden.
A wide opening divides the sitting room and the kitchen. It is open enough to be a social layout while still maintaining clear, separate rooms. Both rooms feature the original solid oak parquet floor.
The kitchen is designed in classic style with dark gray cabinet doors, brass fittings, and a marble countertop and backsplash.
There are only traditional cabinets along one wall, fitted with a stove and a butler sink. The wall to the right is fitted with a large black-painted wooden cabinet with glass doors that can house everything from glasses to cookware.
The room features a beautiful bay window that lets in lots of light. This is why the dark shade on the wall doesn’t feel too gloomy.
Double doors in the living room give access to the television room with custom cabinets and a white color palette.
The entry hall is truly magnificent. It features wooden panels, ceiling coffers, and a beautiful, original built-in bench and cloakroom.
The arched door in the corner hides the staircase leading to the first floor. The hallway has two entries, one next to the staircase and the main one in the opposite corner.
The hall on the upper floor boasts an incredibly beautiful hand-painted ceiling that is said to have been painted by Evert Taube.
The dormer window in the corner of the landing is used as a smart, small home office.
The master bedroom is painted in a fresh, light purple shade and features built-in wardrobes on either side of the bed.
The first floor has three large bedrooms and a bathroom.
A small hall with a charming arched gray-painted ceiling leads to the first-floor bathroom.
The bathroom is designed in a stylish gray and white palette with a freestanding bath under the small, arched window and a separate shower.
The top floor is left as one big open space with gray-painted wooden floorboards and white walls and ceiling.
The charming garden is surrounded by greenery. It has several seating areas, a pergola, flower beds, and a vegetable garden.
The house is listed for sale at Nya Kvadrat – styling by Malin Hjelm and photography by Alen Cordic.
