A Colorful Eclectic Victorian Maisonette Home in England
The top two floors of a beautiful Victorian house in Nottingham, England, have been transformed by the current interior designers and owners (Jodie Hazlewood of The House Upstairs) into a stunning maisonette home filled with color, art, and eclectic decor.
The beautiful three-bedroom house features many original elements, including stained-glass windows, high ceilings, and exposed timber beams, which give the home its historic character. These original elements and grand proportions are paired with a wealth of color, from paint colors to furniture and vibrant wallpapers.
The apartment has a stunning open-plan living room and kitchen. The ground-floor spaces (excluding the kitchen) are fitted with pine floorboards.
The sitting room is a wonderful space with a huge three-section bay window that draws in plenty of natural light. A wide opening surrounded by a beautiful custom bookcase separates the living room from the kitchen.
There is plenty of space for two sitting areas and it features a lovely fireplace with a marble surround.
The kitchen is a cozy space laid with hexagon terracotta tiles (the same as in the hallway). The room features a large island that was once a gentleman’s outfitters cupboard, topped with an oak countertop.
The space above the Lacanche range has been decorated with reclaimed antique tiles by Maitland & Poate.
The green skirting boards and window frames add a bright, natural color pop to the room.
The entry hall opens into a grand open room that is now used as a dining room. The walls are painted in a soft pink shade, and the room connects to the kitchen and the sitting room.
During the renovation work, an original frieze was discovered, and the owners decided to display this beautiful feature as they found it.
There is a guest bedroom on the lower floor, painted in a rose pink shade and with its own bathroom.
A wide black-painted front with stained glass opens into the front hall with hexagon terracotta floor tiles, pink wall paneling, and a dusty pink glass-paneled door.
The powder room is decorated with Pierre Frey’s vibrant ‘Arty’ wallpaper.
The staircase leads to an open space that has been turned into a wonderful snug with a fireplace adorned with red tiles and a freestanding bath under the window.
The walls in the snug are decorated with Pierre Frey’s ‘La Pannonie’ wallpaper.
Just off the snug, the owners created a small kitchenette, so you can take your morning coffee in the snug (which is located next to the master bedroom).
The master bedroom has a high-pitched ceiling with exposed wooden beams. Two large Velux windows flood the space with light, and the space under the eaves is used for storage, hidden by blue curtains.
A wide doorway in the bedroom opens into this grand space that is now used as a dressing room and home office.
The entire room is decorated with wallpaper by Minnie Kemp, which is paired with vibrant yellow built-in joinery.
The third bedroom is decorated with blue wallpaper and features built-in wardrobes.
The bathroom on the second floor is decorated with pink Moroccan tiles and features a walk-in shower.
An olive-green metal staircase, wrapped in jasmine, connects the private courtyard garden to the apartment’s front door.
The courtyard garden features David Austin roses, honeysuckle, and jasmine. There is a raised terrace with terracotta checkerboard tiles which is perfect for a large lounge sofa.
