A Narrow Five-Story House with a Roof Garden in London’s Clerkenwell
This home in the heart of Clerkenwell in London is a great example of what to do when you want to build a house on a narrow plot. The Wee House – as it is called – is a 640 square feet house designed by Joe Wright Architect, divided over five stories.
The narrow house is an excellent example of designing interior spaces with limited available space. Each floor only has one function, whether that’s cooking, sleeping, or living. And on the top floor, they created a charming plant-filled roof terrace.
The house’s floor plan is a triangular shape with light coming in from the front window and a skylight. The tiny house has also been extended in the back to create two bathrooms.
You enter the house on the ground floor, straight into the kitchen. Though on the left side of the front door, a white curtain hides space to hang coats and store shoes to keep it tidy.
The kitchen design is fresh and white, with a concrete worktop and gray vinyl flooring.
The lower ground floor is home to a cozy and quiet bedroom. Glass bricks and a low-level window provide the room with natural light, which is reflected through the room by the mirror wall.
The wardrobe is hidden behind the curtain.
The living room is a fantastic space painted in ‘Pelt’ by Farrow and Ball and featuring a sash window offering lovely views of traditional London buildings.
The walls are lined with bookshelves, creating a cozy spot to read.
The dining room is painted in ‘Card Room Green’ by Farrow and Ball and also features a large sash window overlooking the London street.
The top floor is home to a bright home office with shelves hanging on the walls and windows on two sides.
Sliding doors in the home office open up to a charming roof terrace.
The secluded walled roof garden sits on top of the house, featuring a wonderful variation of plants, including jasmine, winter flowering clematis, and honeysuckle.
Deep pre-cast concrete blocks were placed on the front façade, around a new front door and deep-set glazing. The work was undertaken by contractor Beam Development and was built using a design by architect Joe Wright.
The house is listed for £815,000 at The Modern House.
