At the heart of this transformation is a truly bespoke kitchen, a warm and inviting space created with Darling Maeve handcrafted cabinetry, expertly designed by Emily Hicking at Grid Thirteen.

The kitchen was designed to reflect the personalities of the cottage’s owners, Richard and Joy. It is warm, welcoming, and deeply family-oriented. They envisioned a space that would feel luxurious yet entirely livable, a hub for both everyday life and lively gatherings with their extended family, friends, and their beloved dog, Winston.

Emily answered this brief with sensitivity and style, centering the kitchen around a soft blush pink Aga. This standout piece, with its classic curves, pays homage to the home’s heritage, while a sleek stone-clad mantle introduces a clean-lined, contemporary edge.

The cabinetry, finished in Darling Maeve’s signature paint colours ‘Nithered’ and ‘Rambling Rose,’ blends subtle greys and blush tones that echo the warmth and charm of the space.

c

The cabinetry showcases the elegant ‘Harewood’ and ‘Lister’ door styles, and the pink palette carries throughout the room, from the expansive, storage-rich island to the bespoke pantry and breakfast cabinets.

The island itself is a functional focal point, offering generous prep space and seating for four with luxury stools that tuck seamlessly underneath. An adjoining dining table provides the perfect spot for formal meals and cherished family moments.

Completing the space are Atlas Plan sintered stone worktops and a coordinating backsplash, chosen for their elegant durability, as well as high-performance appliances and hardware. These include the iconic Aga, a Westin overhead extractor, Quooker boiling water tap, Abode mixer tap, and cabinetry finished with refined hardware from Joseph Giles.

c

Practicality has been given just as much attention as beauty. Tall cabinetry offers discreet storage for dry goods, glassware, crockery, and small appliances — all while maintaining the kitchen’s cohesive, curated look. A sweeping sink run adds further prep space and takes full advantage of views over the cottage’s beautifully landscaped gardens.

One of the standout features is the walnut wine wall situated beside the dining area. The stunning design element doubles as a practical wine store. Its soft, integrated lighting enhances its rich tones and adds a gentle glow, elevating the space with a touch of understated luxury.

A Charming Cotswold Cottage with a deVOL Kitchen https://www.thenordroom.com/charming-cotswold-cottage-devol-kitchen/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 09:24:25 +0000 https://www.thenordroom.com/?p=61520 Set in the storybook village of Barnsley, this exquisitely restored Grade II-listed cottage dates back to the 1690s. Beautifully proportioned and full of charm, this former row of four workers’ cottages has been lovingly transformed into a warm, inviting country retreat, where original character meets thoughtful contemporary design.

With its honeyed stone façade, mullioned windows, and climbing greenery, the house embodies a typical Cotswolds look. Inside, the craftsmanship continues, with natural stone floors, exposed beams, handmade furnishings, and carefully sourced British materials all brought together with extraordinary attention to detail.

Originally built to house workers from nearby Barnsley House (now a country house hotel), the cottage has evolved over the centuries, and now offers generous living spaces while retaining the quiet intimacy of its origins. There are plenty of cosy nooks to unwind in, alongside sociable, open rooms made for entertaining.

At the heart of the home is a bespoke kitchen by deVOL, a space where modern comforts and historic charm blend beautifully.
